I went to a very Progressive private school. We did not learn stupid stuff like the alphabet or multiplication tables. I had to teach myself these things later in life. It's tough to look things up in a dictionary if you don't know the alphabet. I also found the multiplication tables handy later in life.
However, we did learn a lot of songs (in Spanish) from the Spanish Civil War. Also a lot of propaganda from the Soviet Union. And folk songs by Pete Seeger. So my time there was not wasted.

Wow. Although to be fair, while the Austin public schools did teach Mr. B the alphabet, they fell down on the multiplication tables. Memorizing seems not to be in vogue anymore. I tried to help him memorize them but he's still slow and faltering with them. I suppose use will resolve that. Maybe.
BTW, like your new Amazon book link in the sidebar. I had one like that for a while. Forget why I don't anymore. But I'm content with my own inside page linked to the top of the home page.
He'll have to learn them himself--I did. Eventually.
I actually find knowing them helpful.
Finally, get to read your book. I feel like I meet my own relatives again, Miriam - I almost said to your "aunts in hats": "Long time no see, ladies!".
