Has anyone tried the Kindle app on the iPad?

I'm thinking of getting an iPad, with a Kindle application, but I've heard there might be problems with the app. There has been some grumbling about incompatible formats and other stuff I can't quite understand. But I know if there's a problem, I will have it in spades and not be able to do anything with it. I say this as one who is still shaking my head about how to replace the batteries in the remote for the Wii. I'll have to read the manual, the thought of which gives me real brain pain.

So--should I get a Kindle, for $150 and change, or break down and get an iPad ($500 and counting)?

Please, my reticent, not to say taciturn, readers, let me know what I should do. And how do I replace the batteries in the Wii remote, currently in two pieces? I'm pretty sure it isn't supposed to be like that.

I love my Kindle (we originally had Nooks, but those got passed down to my teenagers). It does what I need it to do - which is to say, allow me to carry 3500 books in my purse. I particularly like the fact that it is not backlit; I have had horrendous insomnia for many years, and backlit devices keep me from going to sleep.

Since I already have a laptop (I love my Mac ridiculously, and it's probably illegal in some state or another) I didn't need the extra functions on the iPad.

I do have friends who swear by their iPads, though.

I'm guessing you prefer the Kindle to the Nook.

I'm hoping the iPad will do things my Hp won't do--like play my YouTube videos. For some reason, the sound doesn't work on the HP. I blame Windows Vista.

I do prefer the Kindle, but only because we travel overseas and the Nook won't let us buy books or get our periodicals overseas.

My husband prefers the Nook.

Either way, the prices of legacy published ebooks are ridiculous. Thank goodness there are lists of quality e-published books out there (I like the site Good Reads).

My brother-in-law seems to really like his Kindle-on-ipad. He used to have an actual Kindle, he liked that it wasn't back-lit, but all I saw him with when we visited was the ipad.
