I can't speak for everyone, but I can say this works for me.
I've lost 25 pounds in the last ten weeks (a healthy weight loss, with a large muscle gain as well - I've taken up boxing and I absolutely LOVE it).
I hit a plateau three weeks ago and the act of simply switching a light lunch and large dinner around (I've always had a hearty breakfast) broke my plateau and I dumped 4 pounds in a week before going back to my regular 2.
The "calories in/calories out" calculation never worked on it's own for me. I can eat far more calories and continue to lose weight if I pay attention to *when* I'm eating them. Calories are definitely a consideration, but so is schedule.

Creepiest thing:
Since I started having a bacon egg and cheese sandwich every morning, I've lost 15 pounds without doing much else. Crazy...
