Why do people in poor neighborhoods like to walk in the middle of the street...
despite oncoming traffic? I use the word "like" because they must like it--certainly no-one is paying them to do it.
Or do they believe that their 200 lb bodies can repel two tons of steel moving at 25 miles per hour? If so, a course in high school physics is in order.

When I was a newly minted American resident of 5 months, I got my first job at the local florist. One of my duties was arranging the street display in the morning. Once, when I was outside working I noticed an elderly lady walking uneasily near the shop. All of a sudden the woman fell, in a middle of sidewalk, extended her hands towards me cried for help. I run; but before I could reach her, my boss screamed at me " Come back this minute!" Turned out, the woman was professional litigator in multiple "public accident" cases. She was making her living out of suing people who had a misfortune helping her before the arrival of ambulances and policemen...
Just saying.
Tat: A fascinating story. People never cease to amaze me.
Wow. Tell me the name of the city so I can avoid it.
I have a T-shirt, given me by my son, Dick, which says "Brooklyn, where the weak are eaten"...
That's funny. I recently finished David McCullough's "The Great Bridge," which portrays Brooklyn originally as more genteel than NYC. There is an older tee-shirt, bumper sticker, slogan, whatever on the same theme but broader: "America is not for wimps."
